Buddha

From root word bodhi, awakened one, Buddha refers the founder of buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama. He was a spiritual teacher in ancient India over two thousand years ago. According to scriptures, Buddha lived in the Liang Dynasty as a monk and probably travelled throughout the eastern regions of the world. Now his divine form is the heart of many temples, can be seen throughout villages, cities, forums, magazines, places of pilgramage and homes across the globe. Budai has always been a deity of contentment, abundance, and joy. In Japanese lore he is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, Shichi Fukukin. In China known as Laughing Buddha.

The presence of Buddha has become intrincic to Buddhist, Taoist and Shinto culture to begin with. The Hindu Puranas introduce Gautama Buddha as an avatar of Vishnu. Several Hindu traditions name Buddha as the most current of ten principal avatars, known as the dasavataras. Tao-Buddhists have recognized Buddha to be an incarnation of Lao Tzu. One Muslim scholar, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, proposed that Buddha was the prophet Dhu'l-Kifl, as well as the Biblical character Ishmael. According to other Muslim scholars, Dhu'l-Kifl may have been the Ezekiel of the Bible. Known by Budai, Budai Luohan or Hotei in Japan, meaning laughing Buddha , the prophesized Buddha of the future. There are many forms of buddhism today, all of which recognize that there have been many incarnations of Buddha on earth, including the Buddha that is yet to appear.
